The Rendlesham Forest UFO Incident is the best document UFO case of all time and with a huge amount of credibility due to it happening on a military base with many high ranking officers, all puzzled by the events that unfolded.
On December 26th, 1980, the twin U.S Air Force bases between Bentwaters and Woodridge, in Suffolk, England, showed little signs of activity, but that evening would turn out to be one of the most important UFO events in history.
Things kicked off when USAF Airman First Class John Burroughs noticed some unexplained flashing red and blue lights. The lights were coming from within the Rendlesham Forest, between the two bases. Upon the discovery of the unidentified lights, Burroughs notified his supervisor, Staff Sergeant Bud Steffens, who attended the scene.
Their first thought was that it was a crashed aircraft and the question of a security breach crossed their minds, but they both set out to get a closer look. As they approached to the unidentified craft, they noticed a white light in addition to the blue and red. The color configuration and movement of the lights were like nothing they were familiar with. They wanted to get closer, but they decided it was a better idea to report it before investing further.
They drove back to the East Gate where they used a landline in the guard’s shack instead of using their radios (which were susceptible to scanners if it was a security breach). The on-duty Flight Chief at RAF Woodbridge, Jim (James) W. Penniston was told to rendezvous with Burroughs and Steffens at the East Gate, where he was briefed on the unusual situation.
Little did they know, but fifteen minutes earlier, a ”bogey” had been reported on radar, but soon disappeared. It was clear that the two were connected. Steffens didn’t return to the scene, but Penniston and Burroughs did, accompanied by Airman First Class Edward Cabansag. Another man, Master Sergeant J. D. Chandler, also planned to join their investigation. They drove back towards the craft before continuing on foot, but after all four of the men’s radios simultaneously malfunctioned, Chandler stayed with the vehicle to relay messages back to base.
Having not heard an aircraft crash and thinking it had successfully landed, they proceeded into the forest with extreme caution. As they got deeper into the forest, they lost sight of Chandler and the military vehicle, so Cabansag stayed where he was to try a build a chain of sight in case something happened.
Just Penniston and Burroughs continued. As they got closer to the craft, they noticed the air was filled with static electricity and they described the experience as ”wading through water”. As the two men approached the clearing, a bright flash of light illuminated the surrounding area from above and Burroughs was engulfed in the beam, making him react by dropping to the ground. Once the light had cleared, Penniston spotted the object ahead and saw it was clearly a small metallic craft of some sort, measuring approximately 9 feet high and about the same width.
As they got closer to the craft, Penniston saw what he could only describe as ”something similar to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs”, which is when he sketched them down on a notepad, along with a quick drawing of the craft.
As they walked around the craft and investigated further, he also took a sketch of it from the side. After which he proceeded closer to the craft to touch it.
Penniston recalled the craft, noting; “The skin of the craft was smooth to the touch [and made him think of smooth, opaque, black glass], void of seems and imperfections, until I ran my hand over the symbols. The symbols were nothing like the rest of the craft, they were rough, like running fingers over sandpaper.”
Moments after touching the craft, a bright white light flared from the top of the craft, temporarily blinding Penniston’s view, but it quickly receded when he pulled his hand back away from the craft.
Then the craft slowly started to lift off from the ground. It took a couple of minutes to rise above the tree line as Penniston and Burroughs watched on in amazement. The Rendlesham Forest UFO then took off into the night sky at what Penniston noted ”speed impossible”.
Minutes later the two men saw another light coming through the trees, but they noted it was a lighthouse from a few miles away (this is the lighthouse that was suggested to be responsible for the entire incident by skeptics and agencies). Upon returning to Cabansag and walking back to the vehicle where Chandler had stayed, Penniston and Burroughs noticed their watches were running about 45 minutes slow. And despite their colleagues assuring them they had been gone for that amount of time, they recall their experience lasting just a couple of minutes.
Burroughs also reported the time from dropping to the floor after the light beam to the craft taking off as just a few seconds, but Penniston reported the time (when he was examining the craft) as more than a few minutes.
After these reports, the event was cemented into the UFO history books, but the Rendlesham forest incident was far from over.
December 27th, 1980 – Night #2
With these unexplainable reports all fresh in their minds, it was a hot topic at the base, but the following evening, the unthinkable happened. The UFO returned.
The on-duty shift commander, Lieutenant Bruce England, was notified and he immediately went to find the deputy base commander, Charles Halt, who was at a Combat Support Group Awards Dinner nearby. England took Halt to the side and said: “It’s Back. The UFO is back, sir.”
Halt wasted no time. His first task was to assemble a team and gather equipment. He wasn’t willing to go into the forest unprepared. He demanded light-alls, flash lights, spare batteries, cameras, a starlight scope (night vision device), a Geiger counter, radios, and utility jackets, just to name a few.
Upon inspection of the light-alls, it was found that they weren’t functioning correctly and Halt demanded they be refueled. Airman Tony Brisciano, the on-duty officer at the Fuels Management Branch, was the one on the receiving end of Halt’s increasingly impatient demands. Upon arriving at the military gas pumps at Woodbridge, it was clear that word had got out of the UFO’s return, he described the scene as ”chaotic”.
The light-alls would not function and were not able to be taken into the forest. There’s no definitive list of all the personnel who went out on the second night, but here are those who were definitely present:
Lieutenant Bruce England
Deputy Base Commander Charles Halt Sergeant Monroe Nevels
Master Sergeant Bobby Ball
Sergeant Adrian Bustinza
USAF Airman First Class John Burroughs
Halt recorded the events that unfolded over the next few hours on a pocket cassette recorder he carried. The recording can be heard on Youtube. The tape is stopped many times, claimed by Halt to be due to inactivity, but this led many people to believe that parts of the tape were hidden from the public.
The team went into the forest to investigate the sightings. Penniston was not given permission to join Halt’s team at the start. The team split into smaller groups and searched the forest. The tape gives a detailed rundown of what happened, but here’s a brief description of the events that unfolded…
The team went into a clearing they suspected to be the landing site. They sensed high levels of radiation on the Geiger counter and noticed broken tree branches, suggesting something had taken off or landed there. Halt and England discussed seeing a light between the trees ahead of them. Halt then ordered his team to ”douse the flashlights” in that direction. They saw a yellow flashing light (also described by other members of the team as a red light with a yellow tinge to it) which appeared to be moving closer towards them and getting brighter. It was described as having ”pieces” of light shooting off of it (which Halt described as ”molten lava”).
He said on the tape that they were looking at if from two to three hundred feet away and it was swaying side to side. When they put the star scope on it, it appeared to have a hollow dark center, like the pupil of an eye winking at them.
The investigation continued through the forest for some hours, until Halt and his group were approached by a light coming from the south. They observed the beam of light, described as a pencil-thin light (like a modern laser pen) ”shooting” the ground about 10 feet in front of them before retracting and moving away.
More lights were seen, claims of up to five, but those were not pulsating or swaying, they were steady. Then an object was noticed in the sky, beaming light down to the ground over the Woodbridge base, said to be aimed directly into the base’s weapons storage where nuclear weapons were housed. This is where Halt’s cassette recorder allegedly ran out of tape.
Halt and his team watched this unidentified flying object just hovering in the distance above the weapons hold. None of them had any idea what to do because there was no protocol for such an event, so the team returned back to the base.
After meeting up with the rest of the team and having a discussion with Burroughs, Halt spotted a light in the clearing they had examined earlier that evening. Burroughs was given permission to approach the light in an attempt to identify whether it was the same thing him and Penniston saw the previous evening.
Burroughs was accompanied by Sergeant Adrian Bustinza, and the two set off in the direction of the light. As they approached, a bright flash of light covered Burroughs, and Sergeant Bustinza dropped to the ground. Burroughs disappeared in the explosion of light, and the field turned to darkness. Burroughs then reappeared and turned to Bustinza, who asked “what just happened to you?”, but Burroughs had no memory of what occurred during the several minutes he was gone. The two then returned to the base with nothing but more questions.
In the aftermath, Jim Penniston, debriefed the commander of the events that unfolded and was told by the commander (described by Penniston as ”a thin warning”): “Project Blue Book ended in 1969, and sometimes things are best left alone”.
There’s a lot more to the Rendlesham Forest UFO story, including reports of another group coming face-to-face with alien beings and also a lot of suspicious activity that went on after the incident with secret high-pressure interviews, claims of the eye-witnesses being injected with Sodium Pentothol (truth serum), evidence being conveniently lost, photos from that night never being developed properly and threats to agree everything they witnessed was just the light house in the distance.
If you would like to read the full and complete story on The Rendlesham Forest UFO, I would highly recommend the book Encounter in Rendlesham Forest: The Inside Story of the World’s Best-Documented UFO Incident.
If you thought the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident was mind- boggling, then just wait until you hear about what happened to Penniston in the following days. This is where things get really bizarre!
After the ordeal, Penniston kept seeing a sequence of ones and zeros in his head. With the feeling of losing his mind and the urge to write them down, he filled out sixteen pages which he felt were ”downloaded” from touching the hieroglyphs on the craft. When he’d finished writing them, the numbers that were flashing, in what he described as his ”mind’s eye”, were gone. He was glad to get some normality back in his life after such a stressful ordeal. He put the notebook in a drawer at home and that’s where it stayed for the next fourteen years.
Penniston carried on his career in the military until he retired in 1993. A year after his retirement, he seeked out a local hypnotherapist in an effort to get medical treatment for health and sleep issues.
On September 10th, 1994, during his second hypnosis session, it was indicated that he had received a ”telepathic download of numbers” when he touched the raised symbols on the craft. He also had a blocked area in his memory which the hypnotherapist was amazed by, sharing that she’d only read about the condition and never actually met anyone who had experienced it.
Shortly after the second hypnosis session, Penniston decided to share some of the code he wrote fourteen years ago with a few trusted people;
Linda Moulton Howe
Nick Ciske (a web designer and expert in ASCII and binary code)
Joe Luciano (a computer systems engineer who had experience with binary code while working in the USAF)
Upon sharing his vision and notes from the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident, it was very quickly discovered that the ones and zeros he had burned onto his brain all those years ago was in fact binary code. And the next task was to analyze all the numbers in order to see if it would decipher a potential message or some other information.
Well, they got more than they ever expected. What they deciphered was both amazing and intriguing, and still completely baffles alien and mystery enthusiasts today.
We won’t put the sixteen pages of original binary code here, but you can easily find them with a simple Google Images search. But, here is what was deciphered from the binary code that Penniston wrote down on his notepad:
Exploration of Humanity 666 8100 52.0942532N 13.131269W Continuous For Planetary ADVAN??? Fourth Coordinate Continuout UQS CbPR BEFORE 16.763177N 89.117768W 34.800272N 111.843567W 29.977836N 31.131649E 14.701505S 75.167043W 36.256845N 117.100632E 37.110195N 25.372281E Eyes of Your Eyes Origin 52.0942532N 13.131269W Origin Year 8100
It’s strange that the binary code translated into a message saying ”Exploration of humanity” and an origin year 60 centuries into our future. The co-ordinates have a lot more meaning behind them when you plug the co-ordinates in to find the locations:
Exploration of Humanity 666 8100

These are the co-ordinates when deciphered. They show the location of many places that were considered to have alien-activity linked to them, especially Hy’Brasil and the Pyramids in Egypt.
There is currently no explanation to the binary and deciphered coordinates other than this: It was the details of the extra-terrestrial’s mission.
